But the real palace isn’t in the gilding — it’s behind it: in rooms the standard ticket won’t open, and in the quiet that falls once the public leaves. A private visit after hours is access to the dark side of power: the secret itineraries, the prisons, the Inquisitors’ room and the empty Great Council Hall, sounding the way it was meant to. - The Secret Itineraries Itinerari Segreti: the chancellery of state secrets, the room of the State Inquisitors — the secret service founded in 1539 — and the torture chamber.
- The Piombi and the Pozzi The lead cells under the roof, baking in summer and freezing in winter, and the dank “wells” at the waterline. This is where Casanova was held.
- Casanova’s escape route The cell from which, by his own account, he broke through the ceiling in 1756 and crossed the roof — the only known escape from the Leads.
- The Great Council Hall About 53 metres with not a single column, Tintoretto’s Paradise filling the wall, and a frieze of 76 doges where, instead of Marino Falier — beheaded for treason — hangs a black veil.
- The Bridge of Sighs The line between power and prison; the name was coined by the Romantic poets.
By day, people see only the grandeur. But this building was made not for guests but for power — with cells above the courts and a secret service two steps from the throne. Once the public leaves, the palace finally tells you not about luxury, but about how the Republic actually held people in its grip.
