The best time to visit Venice: a season-by-season guide
Most people choose Venice by the calendar of their holidays rather than the calendar of the city. It is a mistake: the difference between August and November here is greater than the difference between two countries.
What follows is the anatomy of the Venetian seasons, and an explanation of why acqua alta is not something to be afraid of.
Spring: March to May
Spring arrives abruptly. One day the canals are damp; the next the light turns piercingly clean.
March and April suit anyone looking for balance. The crowds are still thin, Easter week excepted, and the air reaches fifteen degrees. It is the moment to see the Venetian gardens: yes, a city of stone has them, they are simply hidden behind the palace walls.
May is the golden mean — warm enough to dine on a roof terrace, without the punishing heat. Hotel prices have risen noticeably by then.
Summer: June to August
To be honest, summer is the hardest season. Venice, shut inside its lagoon, becomes a heated stone trap in July and August. Humidity reaches ninety per cent and the narrow calli fill with people off the ships.

- In mid-August Italy goes on holiday: many genuine restaurants and shops are shut.

- Thirty-five degrees at that humidity is felt as forty-five.

- Two to three hours to enter the Basilica.
If summer is unavoidable: stay on the Lido, where there is a breeze and a beach; walk before nine and after eight; and spend the middle of the day on the water. An hour in a boat in that weather is not a luxury but a means of survival.
Autumn: September to November
The connoisseur’s choice. This is the season of the soft light that Titian and Tintoretto worked in.
September carries the film festival: the Lido fills, hotel terraces turn into runways, prices peak and the atmosphere is charged. In 2026 Homo Faber and Glass Week joined it, making the densest month in years.
October and November belong to the table. The heat lifts, artichokes from Sant’Erasmo appear at the Rialto market, and the heavier Veneto reds sit properly against the cool.
Winter: December to February
Brodsky came to Venice only in winter, and it is not hard to see why. An empty Piazza San Marco, footsteps carrying across the paving, and fog that erases the line between water and sky.
In favour: no crowds, cheaper hotels, an atmosphere available in no other season. Against: damp and wind. The answer is to warm up in the museums and the theatres — it is the best time for the opera, and for the Palazzo Ducale, where you will have the halls almost to yourself.
Acqua alta: what it actually is
A temporary rise in sea level, generally between November and April. The water covers the lowest points for a few hours and withdraws.
Since 2020 the city has been protected by the MOSE mobile barriers, which block the catastrophic tides. A low tide of eighty to a hundred centimetres still appears on San Marco and turns the square into a mirror — the best thing that can happen to a photographer.

When is Venice least crowded?
From the second half of November to the end of January, Christmas and new year excepted. A second window runs from early February until Carnival.
What should I bring in autumn and winter?
Waterproof footwear, layers and an umbrella. If high water is forecast, overshoes or boots — both are sold locally.
Do museums close during acqua alta?
No. Only the ground floor of the Basilica and a few sites at the lowest points close, and then for a matter of hours.
Which month is cheapest?
November, and January after the holidays. The difference against May can reach half the hotel rate.
