Venice Architecture Biennale 2027: The Complete Guide for Non-Architects
The 20th International Architecture Exhibition runs from 8 May to 21 November 2027 — across the Giardini, the Arsenale and the whole city. The programme will be announced closer to the opening, but you can already plan a trip and decide whether it's for you. What the Architecture Biennale is — and why 2027 belongs in your calendar
The Venice Biennale alternates two faces: in even years, art (2026 is In Minor Keys — our guide here); in odd years, architecture. 2027 is an architecture year, and it's the 20th, anniversary edition — one of the most important architecture events in the world. The dates are already set: 8 May to 21 November 2027, with preview days on 6 and 7 May. The venues are the same as the art edition — the Giardini, the Arsenale and dozens of projects around the city.
Don't be put off by the word "architecture". This isn't an exhibition of blueprints for professionals. It's large spatial statements — installations, models, environments you walk into — about how we live, build and coexist with the world. Often more spectacular and physical than the art Biennale.
The curators and the theme: Wang Shu, Lu Wenyu and "Do Architecture"
The 2027 edition is curated by the Chinese architects Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, founders of the Amateur Architecture Studio (1997). In 2012 Wang Shu became the first Chinese citizen to win the Pritzker Prize (architecture's "Nobel"); their signature is working with local craft, reclaimed materials and the memory of a place, rather than glossy towers. Their landmark works — the Ningbo History Museum and the China Academy of Art campus in Hangzhou — build salvaged old brick and tile into their very walls.
The theme is "Do Architecture" (in full, "Do Architecture — For the Possibility of Coexistence Facing a Real Reality"). Put simply: the curators call for architecture to return from abstraction, speculation and the dictates of technology to reality — to material, craft, local cultures, and the coexistence of nature and the artificial. Their point is blunt: enough talking, time to build. It's the profession's answer to the ecological crisis, runaway urbanisation and the rise of AI.
Where, when and how much
Dates. 8 May to 21 November 2027, preview 6–7 May. Like the art edition, it's a six-month marathon — you can choose the window that suits you.
Venues. National pavilions in the Giardini and the Arsenale, plus projects across the historic centre.
Hours and tickets. The details — prices, hours, closing days — will be announced closer to the opening. Going by recent editions, expect a single ticket for both venues, closed Mondays, and a switch between summer and autumn hours. We'll update this piece as soon as the official information is out.
What to expect from the programme — and when it's announced
For now, the theme, the curators and the dates are known. The line-up — the national participations, the main curated show, the collateral exhibitions, the specific names — is announced closer to 2027. That's normal for the Biennale: the suspense holds almost until opening day. We'll keep expanding this article as the programme emerges — bookmark it.
How to plan your visit in advance
The logic is the same as for the art Biennale.
Arsenale or Giardini. Two different venues; you can't do both in a day without losing quality. The honest minimum is 3–4 hours each. The sweet spot is two days: the Arsenale one day, the Giardini the next.

When to go. Spring for bright days and mild weather; summer for the Biennale plus the lagoon; autumn for a quieter Venice and a slower, deeper visit (and the high-water season: more on the seasons and on high water without the myths).
Logistics. Both venues are served by vaporetto — lines 1, 4.1 and 5.1, with stops named exactly that, "Arsenale" and "Giardini"; at peak times they're packed, and a private boat saves around an hour.
