Venice Biennale 2026: what to see and how to get in
The 61st International Art Exhibition opened on 9 May and runs until 22 November 2026. It does not resemble its predecessors: in place of a festival of vanity it offers an act of introspection.
The curatorial premise, "In Minor Keys", turns the city into a space for a quiet but penetrating conversation.
The premise: quieter, deeper, harder
In music theory the major key belongs to anthems and marches; the minor to reflection and depth. Koyo Kouoh proposed setting aside imperial grandeur and the loud narratives of the art market. The exhibition is conceived as a collective score in which polyphony replaces soloists.
This is art that does not shout but speaks at half voice. It gives a hearing to those usually left in shadow: diasporas, difficult histories, private losses.
The curator’s legacy
Koyo Kouoh’s sudden death shortly after her appointment gave the exhibition a particular standing. For the first time in the history of the Biennale, a project has been realised posthumously and in strict accordance with its author’s plan.
The team that had worked with her since the autumn of 2024 preserved every element, from the architecture of the pavilions in the Arsenale to the typography of the catalogue. Visiting this Biennale is also an act of respect towards an intellectual legacy.

Strategy: look slowly
This exhibition cannot be taken at a run: the emotional density of the material lengthens the time spent in every pavilion. In a single day you can realistically do either the Giardini or the Arsenale, but not both.

- The vaporetti between the sites are full. A private boat saves close to an hour on each transfer.
- The collateral programme
- Dozens of projects outside the official venues. Mapping them and securing entry is concierge work.
- Context
- Contemporary art without explanation is hard going. An art historian alongside changes the experience entirely.
